(1 year, 510 hours)
The goal of this career program is to help individuals master the required personal and occupational qualities needed to care for people living at home and in long-term care facilities. Students will learn to identify and respond to the physical and emotional needs of clients/consumers. They will have the necessary skills for promoting physical and mental activities, observing and communicating with the patient, handling specialized equipment, and providing a complete package for personal care.
Students who wish to confine their role to basic homemaking may exit the program after successful completion of the first 7 modules. After completing 80 hours of community placement, the student will receive a certificate as a Personal Attendant. Students who successfully complete the entire curriculum will received a Diploma as a Personal Support Worker.
The Personal Support Worker Training Program was developed as part of the Ontario Provincial Government's plan to reform long-term care and support services provided to people living at home and in long-term care facilities such as Community health care agencies, long-term health care facilities, retirement homes, hospitals, schools, day programs, private duty, hospice and group home.
